Peshawar, Pakistan – In a significant step towards empowering women in the region, the SRSP, in partnership with the UNFPA, launched a skill development training program for 20 women residing in Peshawar. The program specifically targeted women from both host and Afghan communities who are facing poverty, disabilities, or gender-based violence (GBV).
The 15-day training program focused on equipping the participants with valuable skills, including ADDA work, embroidery techniques, and basic design skills. By honing these abilities, the women were better prepared to start their own businesses and contribute to their families’ financial well-being.
Upon completion of the training, each participant received a certificate and a toolkit to assist them in their entrepreneurial endeavors. This comprehensive support provided a solid foundation for the women to embark on their new journeys.
A Commitment to Gender Equality and Empowerment
UNFPA Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to preventing and mitigating gender-based violence is evident in this initiative. Prior to this program, 30 women were already trained in specialized embroidery (ADDA work) and burqa and scarf making. These women have successfully transformed their lives, with their monthly earnings now ranging from PKR 15,000 to 20,000.
This increase in income has not only improved their families’ financial situations but has also elevated their social and economic status. Moreover, the training has boosted their self-confidence and empowered them to take control of their lives.
A Brighter Future for Women
The collaboration between SRSP and UNFPA is a testament to the positive impact that can be achieved through targeted skill development programs. By providing women with the necessary tools and knowledge, these initiatives are empowering them to become economically independent and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
As more women benefit from such programs, we can envision a brighter future where gender equality and empowerment are realized.
A Collaborative Effort
SRSP, in partnership with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Pakistan, IOM Pakistan, and UNFPA Pakistan, recently convened a crucial coordination meeting in Peshawar to enhance referral pathways for Gender-Based Violence (GBV) survivors. The meeting brought together representatives from key stakeholders, including Health, Education, Child Protection, Women Crisis Centers, Social Welfare, and civil society organizations.
Fostering a More Dignified Response
The primary objective of the meeting was to strengthen existing referral mechanisms and ensure that GBV survivors receive timely and appropriate support. By fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, the project aims to create a more dignified and effective response to GBV cases.
SRSP’s Role and Impact
SRSP, a leading organization in the field of social development, shared insights into the project’s components and the established referral and coordination mechanisms. Representatives highlighted the positive impact the project has had on both Afghan refugees and host communities in the region.
Building on Previous Success
Prior to this meeting, SRSP had already played a pivotal role in establishing referral pathways in collaboration with the Health and Social Welfare Departments. These pathways were developed under a UNFPA-funded GBV project, demonstrating SRSP’s commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
Conclusion
The coordination meeting marked a significant step forward in strengthening referral pathways for GBV survivors in Peshawar. By fostering collaboration among key stakeholders, the project is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of those affected by GBV. SRSP’s continued involvement in this initiative underscores its dedication to providing comprehensive support and services to vulnerable populations.
