A Milestone in Jumma Khan Kally: Community-Driven Development for All

Peshawar, Pakistan – A significant step towards inclusive development was taken in Jumma Khan Kally, Peshawar, as a neglected segment of the Afghan community was finally included in the local development process. During the third dialogue, a crucial milestone was reached with the distribution of the first installment of cheques to Community Organization (CO) members representing both host and Afghan refugees.

This initiative marks a significant shift towards community-driven development, as the funds will be utilized to implement a clean drinking water supply scheme. This scheme will benefit both host and Afghan communities, providing them with access to clean and safe drinking water.

The dialogue brought together various stakeholders, including local communities, representatives from the Commissionerate Afghan Refugees, KP, and SRSP staff. The event provided a platform for community members to express their gratitude to the Embassy of the Netherlands in Pakistan for their generous support in addressing the urgent need for clean, safe, and accessible drinking water.

In addition to the distribution of cheques, the event also included the launch of a plantation drive. This initiative aimed to promote climate change awareness and resilience among local communities. By planting trees, the community can contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change and creating a healthier environment for future generations.

This achievement signifies a positive step towards fostering inclusivity and addressing the needs of all communities in Jumma Khan Kally. By empowering the community to drive their own development, this initiative has the potential to create lasting change and improve the quality of life for everyone.

Early Detection, Big Impact: School Screenings Help Students with Hearing and Vision Issues

Early Detection, Big Impact: School Screenings Help Students with Hearing and Vision Issues

Every year, millions of children suffer academically and physically due to undetected hearing and vision problems. These issues can cause them to fall behind in school and struggle to reach their full potential.

To address this challenge, Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) partnered with UNICEF Pakistan to conduct medical screenings for hearing and vision impairments in 11 government schools across Nowshera, Peshawar, and Kohat districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Reaching Thousands of Students

The screening program reached a total of 4,682 students, including both Pakistani host students and Afghan students. This extensive effort identified 207 students with hearing and vision problems.

Equipping Students for Success

Thanks to the program, these 207 students received the support they needed. They were provided with eyeglasses (spectacles) to correct vision problems and hearing aids to improve their hearing.

Collaboration is Key

These screenings were conducted by medical consultants, working in close coordination with the KP Elementary & Secondary Education Department. This collaboration was made possible by the UNICEF-funded project “Social and Economic Inclusion of Poor and Vulnerable from Afghan-Hosting Communities.”

A Commitment to Education

The Deputy Secretary Education and District Education Officer of Peshawar played a vital role in distributing the assistive devices to students in Peshawar. This distribution ceremony highlighted the commitment of local authorities to ensuring all students have the tools they need to succeed.

Early detection and intervention can make a world of difference in a child’s education. By working together, we can ensure that all children, regardless of background, have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
