Mental health. It’s a phrase we hear often, but do we truly understand its depth? It’s not simply the absence of illness, but a state of well-being where individuals can realize their own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and fruitfully, and contribute to their community. And sometimes, that well-being is disrupted. That’s where mental health counseling and psychosocial support services come in.
Many people think mental health counseling is just about talking. And while talking is a part of it, it’s so much more than that. It’s about healing from past traumas, understanding the root causes of our struggles, and ultimately, finding peace within ourselves. It’s about equipping individuals with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges and build a stronger, more resilient sense of self.
This short video clip offers a glimpse into how psychosocial support services are making a real difference in the lives of people facing mental health conditions. It showcases how these services empower individuals to rebuild their lives, fostering hope and promoting recovery. These services can be a lifeline, offering a safe space for individuals to process their experiences, develop coping mechanisms, and connect with others who understand.
The work being done in this area is crucial, and SRSP is grateful to the Embassy of the Netherlands in Pakistan, and the IR&G Project for their dedication to supporting mental health initiatives. By investing in these services, we’re investing in the well-being of our communities and empowering individuals to live full and meaningful lives.
Let’s break the stigma surrounding mental health and continue the conversation. If you or someone you know is struggling, please know that help is available. You are not alone.
The devastating impact of floods can leave communities struggling to rebuild and reconnect. In District D.I. Khan, Pakistan, a beacon of hope has emerged through the collaborative efforts of the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), KfW, and the Sarhad Rural Support Program (SRSP). Through the LACIP II project, significant strides have been made in improving infrastructure and building climate resilience in flood-affected areas.
In Union Council Mahra, SRSP has successfully completed several Integrated Area Upgradation Projects (IAUPs) that are already making a tangible difference in the lives of local residents. These projects include:
Construction of two vital link roads: These roads will significantly improve accessibility, connecting communities and facilitating the transportation of goods and services.
Installation of a new sewerage line: Improved sanitation is crucial for public health and hygiene, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable environment.
Construction of waiting-area sheds: Providing shelter and comfort for those waiting for transportation or accessing public services.
Extensive tree plantations: A vital step towards environmental sustainability and mitigating the impacts of climate change. These plantations will help improve air quality, provide shade, and prevent soil erosion.
These impactful projects, costing a total of PKR 42.4 million, will directly benefit 994 households in the region. The focus on climate-resilient infrastructure ensures that these improvements can withstand future environmental challenges.
The inauguration ceremony was a testament to the power of community involvement and inclusivity. Representatives from PPAF, SRSP staff, students, local community members, and Village Organization (VO) representatives were all present to celebrate this milestone. In a powerful symbol of inclusivity, Mr. Allah Wasaya, a representative of the disabled community, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, highlighting the commitment to engaging all segments of the community in the development process.
This initiative is a shining example of how targeted investments in infrastructure can lead to significant improvements in the lives of those affected by natural disasters. By focusing on climate resilience, community development, inclusive growth, and a sustainable future, projects like these pave the way for a brighter tomorrow for the people of D.I. Khan.
At the age of four, Ahsan Ul Haq contracted polio, a devastating virus that left him permanently disabled. While this could have defined his life, Ahsan refused to let it limit him. Instead, he nurtured a powerful aspiration: to acquire skills that would enable him to move forward and support his family.
His determination led him to SRSP’s training center, where he enrolled in a three-month mobile repair training program. This opportunity was made possible by the “Improving Resilience and Economic Growth of the Vulnerable Segment of Afghan Refugees in KP” project, funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Pakistan.
Ahsan’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of accessible skills training. He exemplifies the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity. Through hard work and dedication, he has gained valuable skills that will empower him to build a better future for himself and his loved ones.
This inspiring project has already impacted the lives of 183 host and Afghan men and women, providing them with various skills and vocational training opportunities. It’s a powerful example of how targeted support can lead to real and lasting change, fostering self-reliance and economic growth within vulnerable communities.
Quality education is the cornerstone of a thriving society, and access to a good learning environment is crucial for students to reach their full potential. In Lower Chitral, significant strides are being made to improve government schools, thanks to a collaborative effort that’s bringing positive change to the lives of countless students.
With the generous financial support of the Federal Republic of Germany, channeled through the PATRIP Foundation and KfW, SRSP has successfully upgraded the infrastructure of 13 government schools in the region. This impactful project is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about investing in the future of Pakistan.
These improvements are multifaceted, touching upon several key areas:
Better Learning Environments: The renovations and upgrades provide students with more comfortable and conducive spaces for learning. Imagine classrooms that are well-lit, ventilated, and equipped with the necessary resources – this is the reality now for students in these 13 schools.
Access to Digital Education: In today’s world, digital literacy is essential. This project has integrated digital education into these schools, giving students access to technology and opening up a world of learning opportunities beyond traditional textbooks. This is a crucial step in preparing them for the future.
Promoting Girls’ Education: Empowering girls through education is a critical goal. By improving school infrastructure and creating a more supportive environment, this initiative actively promotes girls’ education in the area, ensuring that they have the same opportunities as their male counterparts.
This project is a testament to the power of partnership and the importance of investing in education. It’s a shining example of how collaboration between international organizations, local NGOs, and the government can lead to tangible improvements in the lives of communities. The impact of these improved schools will resonate for generations to come, shaping the future of Chitral and contributing to a brighter future for Pakistan.

The inauguration ceremonies, held in different areas of the district, highlighted the collaborative effort between various stakeholders. In the Civil Lines area of Tank, Deputy Commissioner Mr. Tanveer Khan officially opened a new link road, paved streets, a modern drainage system, and a
convenient waiting shed. These improvements will significantly enhance connectivity and accessibility for residents, while the upgraded drainage system will contribute to improved hygiene and sanitation. The waiting shed offers a much-needed space for people awaiting transport, providing shelter and comfort.
Meanwhile, in Gara Baloch, Member of National Assembly (MNA) Mr. Dawar Khan Kundi inaugurated a flood protection wall, a paved link road, a modern drainage system, and another waiting shed. Similar to the projects in Civil Lines, the new road and drainage system will enhance daily life for residents.
These initiatives represent a significant investment in the future of District Tank. By focusing on improved infrastructure, including better roads, effective drainage, and essential public amenities like waiting sheds, the projects aim to create a more comfortable and secure environment for local communities. The improved connectivity will also facilitate access to essential services like healthcare and education, contributing to the overall development of the region.
The successful completion of these projects is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the SRSP team, the support of the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund, and the financial backing of KfW. The LACIP II project continues to play a vital role in empowering local communities and driving sustainable development across the region. These recent inaugurations are just the latest example of the positive impact of this important initiative. The people of District Tank can look forward to further progress and development in the near future.
