In a promising development for sustainable agriculture in Pakistan, strawberry growers in District Charsadda are leading the way in climate-resilient farming. A group of 68 farmers recently completed a four-day training program focused on adapting to the challenges of a changing climate.
Organized by SRSP under the GIZ-funded “Climate Adaptation and Risk Financing project,” this initiative equipped farmers with the knowledge and tools needed to safeguard their livelihoods in the face of increasing climate uncertainty.
Empowering Farmers with Modern Techniques
The training emphasized practical skills and techniques, including:
Best practices for high tunnel farming: Farmers learned about optimal sowing times, efficient irrigation, managing light and wind conditions within high tunnels, pest and disease control, and timely harvesting techniques.
Effective high tunnel management: A dedicated session focused on maximizing the benefits of this technology, a crucial tool for climate-resilient agriculture.
Climate risk management: Growers gained valuable insights into identifying and assessing climate-related threats to their strawberry crops, and developing strategies to mitigate those risks.
A Promising Pilot Project
Our Chief Operating Officer (COO) personally met with the farmers, visited the strawberry fields, and awarded toolkits and training certificates to the participants. The farmers expressed optimism about the positive impact this pilot project will have on their yields and livelihoods.
This initiative is a significant step towards building a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector in District Charsadda. By empowering farmers with modern skills and knowledge, SRSP and GIZ are helping to ensure that strawberry cultivation continues to thrive in the region, despite the challenges posed by climate change.
Looking Ahead
The success of this pilot project is expected to pave the way for similar initiatives in the future, benefiting even more farmers and contributing to a more climate-resilient agricultural sector in Pakistan.
